2016 MCLEOD COUNTY CONSERVATIONIST!!

2016 McLeod County

Soil and Water
Conservation District

Outstanding Conservationist of the Year

Irene Genelin & Andy Cotter

From the McLeod district we have Irene Genelin and Andy Cotter pictured from Hutchinson. Irene and Andy operate 85 acres of land where they have planted wild flowers, prairie grasses as well as wetland restorations and ponds. The land was purchased in 2002 and Andy & Irene were married in 2008 and now share a daughter. They also run an organic fruit farm that focuses on strawberries, apples, pears, and grapes. They have an event rental space in their renovated barn and rent out their well house to overnight guests. Programs that they are enrolled in and/or have applied for are CAP, Water Quality Plan, CRP, WRP, and are also involved in a MDA research grant. Irene and Andy have a true passion for their land that they operate. They put a ton of hard labor and work into their 85 acres and take a lot of pride in it.

Our Mission
To provide assistance to the land users of McLeod County using natural resources to increase the productive use of land while maintaining and improving the soils base, water quality, tree production, wildlife and the overall quality of the county.

Welcome...  Soil and Water Conservation Districts (SWCD's) are political subdivisions of the State of Minnesota established to carry out a program for the conservation, use an development of soil, water and related resources.

Leadership and governance are provided by five (5) board members locally elected as Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors.  The role of the elected supervisor is to develop policy, long range plans and budgets.

Our experience

We know the challenges businesses face today. Our consultants have been in your shoes. They're past owners and operators of businesses in all regions of the world and every industry you can imagine.

SWCD's emphasize cooperation between federal, state and local resource management agencies and local land mangers.

McLeod SWCD is a local unit of government established under state law to carry out conservation programs at the local level.  Our district works with McLeod County landowners to help them manage and protect land and water resources on an all private land and also assist with a variety of natural resource concerns.  The McLeod SWCD is is co-located with the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS).  Both the SWCD staff and NRCD staff work cooperatively on Federal Farm Bill Programs.

McLeod County SWCD has a Native Grass Drill for seeding CRP sites, food plots, and pasture seeding.  Please see 'native grass drill' tab located at the very top to review the rental agreement.
